The next networking tool I want to discuss is the comp card. A comp card is a 5" by 7" collage of pictures that includes your measurements and contact information. No more, no less. "Whew," you're thinking, "that's pretty simple." Actually, it's not. Since the comp card is so clean, it must create an impression immediately - no ifs, ands, or buts. Photographer Joe Edelman says, "You only get 5 shots to make a good first impression and if you don't hit the target with all 5 shots - you will severely limit your chances of being accepted by an agency. Just like your portfolio, your comp card must tell a story - not a short story - just the abridged version of your portfolio." When choosing pictures for your comp card, pick the five strongest. They should be different in mood, showing you in various situations and clothing types. If you don't know which five pics are the strongest, ask for popular opinion; load them all on Myspace or Facebook in a photo album, and give people one week to comment. Whatever pictures get the most positive feedback are probably the ones to use (I just thought of this method; let me know how it works for you!). Edelman puts it well...the right pics are the ones that will make your card stand out in a pile of 20 or so. Think about which those are, and come back later for more on comp cards.
