What is an Open Call?

blog post photo

This question comes in from reader Desi in LA: "I've heard the term 'open call' a couple of times. What exactly is that?"

Glad you asked...an open call is when an agency opens its door to modeling hopefuls, giving them a chance to meet with agents and potentially nab a contract on the spot. As you can imagine, they can be pretty competitive and brutal - if the assistants or agents don't think that a woman has "the look", they'll turn her away pretty quickly.

Agencies will usually hold open calls once a week. Ford Models NYC, for instance, has theirs from 3 PM to 4 PM every Wednesday (women's division only - sorry, guys!). Even scam agencies get in on the open call act. Of course, they'll try to sell you some classes, packages, or other stuff, so you'll get the game right away.

Tips for open calls? Be early, wear solid colored, snug-fitting clothes and bring some snapshots. Comp cards are okay, but clean, bare-faced beauty photos are also great. Good luck!
