Overview
Fitness models are often hired by various companies to help sell or promote their products. For example, fitness apparel companies and manufacturers of exercise equipment may need fitness models to appear in print ads or television commercials. Models are also used as spokespersons for fitness-related companies and products. As with most types of modeling, fitness modeling is competitive and may be difficult to break into. However, with perseverance and hard work, it may be possible. Although there may not be one exact path to follow to start a career as a fitness model, there are some steps to take to take to get started.
Step 1
Develop a lean, toned physique. Fitness models promote products which are intended to help people get into shape, so models need to be in great shape. Most fitness models will need to develop a fitness regimen consisting of aerobic exercise and strength training. Male and female models should have good muscle definition and low body fat.
Step 2
Have professional pictures taken to create a portfolio. A portfolio should consist of various shots, including head shots and full body shots. A large number of photos should highlight the physique. Shots in fitness clothing and bathing suits should be included. Include photos to be part of a comp card. The comp card should contain three or four small photos on one side with information such as weight, height and age. The flip side can include one large photo.
Step 3
Seek professional representation from a modeling agency. Contact agencies and ask if they represent fitness models. Not all modeling agencies represent all type of models. Consider contacting the Better Business Bureau to determine if a modeling agency has any complaints filed against it.
Step 4
Market yourself. In addition to trying to obtain representation from a modeling agency, get yourself out there to meet people in the fitness industry who may have a role in selecting fitness models. Attend fitness trade shows, such as the National Fitness Trade Show, which is held in a different location every year, and other fitness-related events. Network with owners of companies and fitness magazines. Introduce yourself and hand out your comp card.
Step 5
Consider participating in fitness pageants, such as Ms. Fitness. An alternative way to break into the fitness modeling industry is by getting your name out there through competing in fitness events, such as bodybuilding or figure competitions. Representatives from fitness related companies, such as those who sell apparel, exercise equipment and nutritional supplements, are often at competitions. It may also allow a chance to meet agency representatives.
