Overview
Many people turn to hair modeling not only for the modeling and portfolio development, but also for the free hair-styling and products that come with the job. Hair models work at trade shows, are demonstrator heads in classes and pose for print advertising.
Step 1
Know that your chances of becoming a hair model rest on your flexibility. This isn't a field for the squeamish, and often stylists will want to show a big change in their portfolios from one shot to the next. Be very flexible with your look.
Step 2
Check classified sites and jobs boards for hair model advertisements, especially under the bigger cities. Large-scale salons that offer graduate student training often place ads for new hair models.
Step 3
Call upscale, popular salons and ask if there are any open model calls in the future. If there are, be certain to ask if they're working on any particular styles or color techniques that would suit your hair. Leave your name and offer to email pictures and a letter of interest.
Step 4
Be open to many changes and possible damage to your hair. Since a stylist is using your head as a practice tool, the hair may be subject to bleaching, relaxing, stripping and other harsh chemicals that could inflict long-term damage. Most salons will have models sign waivers before performing services. Read everything and leave if you're nervous.
Step 5
Be ready to wait. Open calls become crowded and busy, with numerous stylists looking for hair that suits a very particular purpose. Patience and a good attitude will ensure eventual success in the hair modeling search.
Step 6
Check websites for major product developers like Wella, Sebastian and Redken. These lines often participate in and hold hair industry events that require models. However, many of these top-level shows are quite particular about height and weight, so use the best of your digital snapshots when applying.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- TIP : Sometimes, models will have to pay a small fee of $15 to $20 for their hair styling. Cost is determined by how much leeway the model grants the stylist. Surrender to whatever the stylist wants and treatments may be free.
