Overview
You'll find both advantages and disadvantages to becoming a model at age 16. Since you are older than many teenagers entering the modeling industry, you are more mature and can drive yourself to modeling auditions. However, since you are older, you may have less experience than other models your age. Do not let this discourage you. Many successful models began their careers at 16.
Step 1
Determine whether you meet the criteria for a model. By the age of 16, most teenage girls have stopped growing taller. If you are taller than 5 feet 7 inches tall, most modeling agencies will consider you. You should also have clear skin, symmetrical features and nice proportions. Most mainstream models are a size 4 or smaller. Plus-sized models wear a size 12 to 16 and are also at least 5 feet 7 inches tall.
Step 2
Get photographed. These should be basic pictures of your head and body. Don't get fancy to make yourself look exotic. Show that you are photogenic and that the camera loves you. Smile in your head shot, and show off your proportions in the body shot. Don't waste your money paying a professional photographer to take these. A friend or parent can take them for you. Just be sure to blow them up to 8 by 10. If a modeling agent likes you, she will send you to someone to make your portfolio.
Step 3
Find a modeling agent. This is the most difficult step to becoming a model at 16. You must impress someone inside the industry so that he is willing to represent you. It is possible to mail your photographs to modeling agents, but it is always better to appear in person. Start by applying with the top agencies such as Ford, Elite and Click. They have offices in major cities such as New York and Los Angeles. If they don't sign you, they might recommend other agencies. Avoid any agent who advertises for clients on the Internet.
Step 4
Sign a modeling contract. To become a model at 16 you will need your parents' permission. Read any contract together and understand all the expectations and commitments. Take note of the cut that your agent will take from your modeling fee. It is typically 10 percent to 20 percent. Make sure that you are comfortable with the person who will be calling you with modeling audition appointments.
Step 5
Go to auditions. Since you are 16, you can get a driver's license and can drive yourself to auditions. This is a huge advantage over younger models who must have their parents drive them. You will still need your parents to excuse you from school for some auditions.
Step 6
Prepare yourself for rejection. Even the most successful 16-year-old models are rejected more than they are accepted for jobs. You will spend a lot of time going to auditions, only to be sent away after a cursory glance. Get used to it. Successful models are as persistent as they are beautiful.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- WARNING : Beware of modeling scams. Legitimate modeling agents take a percentage of your modeling fees. If you don't work, they don't get paid. If your modeling agent also has a modeling school and sells photo packages, they are probably a scam. Pay no money up front to be a model.
