Overview
Becoming a model is not an easy task. Besides being attractive and physically fit, you also must have the self-confidence and dedication it takes to make it in the fashion and modeling world. Prepare to be turned down multiple times, and to wait in long lines with other aspiring models hoping to make it big or get discovered.
Step 1
Decide what kind of model you would like to be. There are several different types, including fashion, runway and product models. Most models delve into more than on aspect of the business, doing runway and fashion work along with product campaigns.
Step 2
Take your waist, hip and bust measurements, and determine your shoe and clothing sizes. Go to a doctor or personal trainer or check online to see if you are within your ideal weight range. You may need to start eating better and toning up. Models need to be at the bottom of their weight range. Many models range from 5 feet 7 inches to 6 feet, and weigh between 115 and 125 lbs.
Step 3
Get head and body shots taken. Bring these photos with you to casting calls and send them to agents. If you don't have enough money for a professional photographer, you may be able to get a great deal from an aspiring beginner. Many times, new photographers are just as talented as seasoned professionals, but will do the work for half the cost (or for free, to build up their own portfolio).
Step 4
Attend open casting calls. Look for postings in your local newspaper or online. Most open casting calls don't require you to have an agent. The work you get there can build your portfolio so you can get signed by an agent. Be prepared to spend a lot of time at the casting call---they are usually filled with other women and men who want to land the job as well.
Step 5
Get your name and face out there. Create your own website with your head and body shots, along with your measurements. There are several modeling websites on which you can create a portfolio that will be available to photographers who are looking for models. (See Resources.) These are free to join.
Step 6
Begin to look for an agency. Getting signed by an agency is the most important step toward becoming a successful model. Visit agencies in person and bring your head and body shots or your portfolio. Going in person makes a good impression, and shows that you want to be a part of that agency.
Step 7
Attend go-sees. Your agency should set you up with these. Go-sees are casting calls with designers who are looking for models to be in their runway shows or photo campaigns. You will walk in the designer's clothes so he can see how you look in his designs. Walking runway shows of famous designers is important for gaining the visibility you need to become a supermodel.
