Overview
Nude modeling, or art modeling, is different from other forms of modeling. Unlike fashion and adult modeling, artists seeking figure models are usually interested in both sexes and all ages and body types. For the model, the job offers a chance to learn about visual art and experience a work atmosphere that provides a balance between periods of relaxation and physical exertion. Nude modeling is a freelance career requiring some preparation and resourcefulness to embark upon.
Step 1
Decide what types of modeling you'll be comfortable doing. The most common demand for nude art models comes from artists who draw and paint, but art photographers and sculptors often require models as well. Modeling for sculptors often requires sitting still for longer periods of time. Modeling for photographers requires the shortest pose times, but you may find that some gigs blur the line between art and pornography.
Step 2
Learn to sit still for long periods of time. A good way to do this is to practice some form of meditation or self-hypnosis. Also, practice posing to discover what sorts of poses are more uncomfortable than they look or become more uncomfortable when held for a long time.
Step 3
Contact local college art departments to offer your services as a nude model. Since many college art departments offer figure drawing classes that require daily nude models, this is a source of plentiful, safe nude modeling work. Colleges can also offer an opportunity for you to job shadow a working model and ask for advice about getting started in this line of work.
Step 4
Look for work with local artist cooperatives or coalitions. These are community groups of artists who meet regularly to draw figures and share the cost of hiring a model. If well-established, these groups will often have phone book listings, but otherwise, they must be found through word-of-mouth and local art community boards.
Step 5
Advertise your services as a nude model. When advertising, it is advisable to specify that you work in art modeling, rather than adult modeling. Be prepared, however, to filter out adult offers anyway, and always exercise caution (including a safety plan) if you choose to work at someone's home or private studio.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- TIP : Be wary of clients who request photos of you for any type of modeling other than photography, especially if nude photos are requested.
