Overview
To become a plus size model you need to follow many of the same steps as other types of models, with some notable differences. A plus model looks more like the average woman, not the tall, thin, waif-like creatures that roam the high fashion catwalks. While plus models might not need to work as hard to stay thin, they must work harder to get work. The plus model industry is even more competitive because there is less of a demand for plus models.
Step 1
Measure yourself and be completely honest. If you claim to be the wrong size, you wont fit the clothes on a modeling shoot. Record your exact height without shoes, weight, bust, waist and hips measurements. Also write down your age, eye color, hair color, dress size and shoe size.
Step 2
Assess your potential as a plus model. You must fall into a specific size range. It is between 5 feet 7 and 6 feet tall, and sizes 12 to 18. This ensures that all the plus models on a shoot will look about the same size when photographed together, and so their clothes are interchangeable. A plus model must have an hourglass shape, clear skin and nice facial features.
Step 3
Have some photographs taken. You will need at least one good face shot and one good full body shot. These should show off the best qualities of your face and body. Simple is better. Clothing should not be distracting. Makeup should be simple and light. Modeling agents want to see what you actually look like. Make sure that you are smiling in at least one of your headshots. At least one of your full body shots should show off your legs and curves. A tasteful bathing suit picture is acceptable. These photographs do not need to be professionally done. A friend or relative can take them. Have your prints blown up to 8 x 10 inches.
Step 4
Approach modeling agencies with your photographs if you live in a major city. Concentrate on major modeling agencies with plus size divisions or agencies specializing in plus size models. Call ahead and make an appointment for an evaluation. Most agencies will allow you to do this or have open casting days when anyone can drop by. Be sure to bring a parent if you are under 18 years old.
Step 5
Mail or email your photographs to modeling agencies if you live far away. Call the agencies to make sure you are sending your pictures to the right address. Follow up with phone calls and email messages. Keep in mind that you will need to travel to the agency if it is interested in you, and most of your work will be in the same area. If you can't travel there on a regular basis, you can't be a plus model.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- TIP : Be prepared to be rejected a lot. Even the most successful plus models are turned down for jobs most of the time. Be prepared to go to auditions on a moment's notice. The most successful plus models are often the most determined, not the most beautiful.
- WARNING : The plus modeling industry is full of scam artists. Research any company you consider doing business with. Ignore empty praise and appreciate brutal honesty. If they ask you to pay them money up front it is probably a scam.
