Overview
Many young people claim that they would do anything to become a model, but there are many factors that they have not have considered. The supermodels they see in fashion magazines and strutting on the catwalks make up only a small percentage of working models. Their lives, and the lives of other models, are not as glamorous as many aspiring models believe.
How You Are Judged
Modeling is an industry that judges you based on what you look like. Most attractive people welcome this. However, it is important to realize that models live in a world where everyone is attractive. As a result, every tiny perceived flaw is magnified. You will be criticized for physical features that you cannot control, such as blemishes, your proportions and your height. This atmosphere is challenging to self esteem. You must be willing to withstand being valued solely by what you look like.
Strict Body Type
Models must fit a strict body type at all times. There are constant demands to remain a particular size or lose weight. You must be willing to give up any food that makes you gain weight. Many models have severe eating disorders and crack under the constant pressure to remain thin. The pressure is unrelenting, and it has a negative impact on long term health. This is true even of plus-sized models. They must maintain their size just like other models.
Rejection
Even successful models are rejected far more than they are hired. You must be willing to give up the notion that you will be paid lots of money all the time. While it is true that models are paid well, most models work sporadically. Most models work part-time jobs while running around to auditions. They are lucky if they can get a job or two per month and can pay their bills. There are far more unsuccessful models than there are successful ones.
Model Lifestyle
Most models are young women who move to a big city to pursue a modeling career. As a result, they are in unfamiliar surroundings without the guidance of family and close friends from home. The model lifestyle is full of a wide range of destructive temptations. This includes drug use and the sex industry. Big cities are full of unsavory characters eager to take advantage of impressionable and attractive young women. Many young models lack the maturity to resist these temptations and get themselves into trouble while pursuing modeling careers.
Success
Successful models must still make sacrifices. Modeling careers are short and usually occur while the models are in their teens and 20s. While other kids are going to prom and college, successful models are working. They miss many experiences that other kids take for granted. Successful models must also spend a lot of time away from family and friends. They must travel often. These locations are not always tropical paradises. Most modeling assignments happen in boring studios. Modeling work can be grueling. Shoots and fashion shows last for hours while the model must stand, strut and twist in uncomfortable positions. Many models burn out and just want to return to normal lives.
