Ways to Become a Model

Becoming a model is not easy. The field is fickle and highly competitive. While the demand always exists for a fresh new face, even getting a foot in the door takes the right references, good looks and the confidence to be more than what others expect. No simple how-to plan is available for becoming a model, but certain methods can help kick-start a model on the right path to success in the industry.

Evaluate Your Physical Characteristics

Determining the type of modeling you want to do is the first step to becoming a model. While most commercial models are tall and thin, the variety of products in the market means that there is a need for men and women of every physique. Before launching your career, honestly assess your own body type and what types of modeling might suit you. There are different measurements for different modeling categories. A typical female model is 5 feet 9 inches tall with a 34-inch bust, a 24-inch waist and 34-inch hips. Applicants who fall within an inch of these measurements also have a good chance of success. High-fashion models are between 5 feet 7 inches and 6 feet tall. Find out the dimensions of every category, and get in shape to fit the one that works best for you.

Determine the Type of Modeling Preferred

Various fields in modeling allow for true specialization. You can be a hand model, a model for hair, a model for feet or even for eyes. While your overall physical proportions may not meet the criteria for a typical fashion model, some part of your body that is considered extremely attractive can make you a model in the field.

Compile a Portfolio

Create a professional portfolio. The portfolio is the basis of any model's success. The portfolio should include details of any experience, images of the work the model has done and general images of the applicant shot by a professional.

Research and Apply to Modeling Agencies

Research the various modeling agencies and apply to them using the portfolio you've created. Hundreds of modeling opportunities are advertised online and offline. Use both forms of media, and apply to the agencies for work. Most agencies have a specific form of application and a procedure in place for applying. Follow the directions to the letter if you hope to have a chance at a modeling career. A good modeling agency is essential. The right agent can make or break a model's career. Many major agencies hold auditions for models in different areas. Be careful of scam artists who prey on people who want to break into modeling. Make sure that the people or companies you are dealing with have legitimate contact information, references and a sound reputation. Taking money for modeling classes that end up in no opportunities is the most obvious way for these scam agencies to make money.
