Child ModelingOverview
Modeling may seem like a glamorous industry on TV, but the majority of models never make enough money to support themselves full time. Teens who are interested in modeling should be aware of the difficulties of the profession, and that very few people out of thousands of aspiring models will ever make it big and become well known. That said, there are several things a young model can do to increase his or her odds of success.
Have a Good Attitude
Aside from good looks, an upbeat attitude may be the most important thing about being a model. If you can show your dedication and desire to be a model every time you go to a shoot, agents and photographers will take notice, and you will take better pictures. Especially when working with others in a photo shoot, it is easy to become flustered or negative. Even if things don't go the way you want, maintaining a bright outlook will take you far.
Be Punctual
Being on time is important for any job, but in modeling it is even more essential. At an office, you can stay a bit later to make up for coming in late. As a model, photographers will likely be on a schedule and won't be able to commit extra time. If photos must be taken in daylight, you're out of luck once the sun goes down. Since shoots constantly take place in different locations, planning transportation and routes ahead of time, and planning on showing up early are good ideas. Parental support is important for arranging transportation for teens, or providing a car for older teens with driver's licenses.
Put Your Best Foot Forward
In an industry that is so difficult to break into, do yourself a favor and dress and act professionally. Many teen models are immature; by acting like a businessman or woman, you are more likely to gain the attention of people in the industry and further your chances of getting more work. Shake hands confidently, and look people in the eye when you talk to them. Demeanor is one thing that can differentiate two models who have similar physical assets.
Stay Connected
Being linked in and available is an important part of modeling. You should have an email account that you check consistently, and have a cell phone that is always turned on. Participating in social networking websites and attending social events is also an important part of making contacts in the industry. If you have a friend or mentor in the industry, have him introduce you to people he works with, or forward your portfolio to those who might be interested.
Be Yourself
Fashion puts extreme pressure upon models to conform to industry norms. This might mean you have to be a certain height with certain measurements in order to best appeal to industry. While physical disciple can be demanding, you shouldn't let modeling greatly alter your body or personality. Many models become anorexic or bulimia because of the pressures of staying thin; such conditions are destructive to the body, especially for teens who may still be growing. Be comfortable with your body and don't be afraid to be honest and express your opinions. Getting personality to come through in a photo is the best way to bring that extra bit of spark that can get you noticed. At the end of the day, if things don't work out, at least you will know you were true to yourself.
Other Considerations for Teens
Support from parents is an important part of teen modeling, both for guidance and for practical needs such as transportation. Modeling at the highest level often includes shooting photos in swimsuits or evening wear, or in settings that the parents or the teen may find unsuitable. Parents should attend photo shoots themselves to make sure they approve of the modeling being done; teens will usually be best served by allowing parents to take part and assist them. A teen should make sure to know what kind of modeling they will be doing at a certain shoot, and she should have at least one friend attend a shoot with her, if a parent is unable to accompany her. Don't do a shoot if you do not feel comfortable with the people you are working with or with the attire you are supposed to wear.
