Overview
"Seventeen" magazine, first published in 1944, is an American magazine for teenagers. In recent years, becoming a model for Seventeen has become coveted due to the success of "America's Next Top Model," the winner of which gets a spread in "Seventeen" magazine. Seventeen magazine is one magazine that is always looking for fresh faces, and to be a Seventeen model, you can be any shape or size. They like to hear from everyone.
Step 1
Study the models in "Seventeen" magazine. "Seventeen" magazine has models that shoot what's considered "high fashion." Not everyone can pull off these types of poses. The poses can be a little more edgy than catalog modeling. A lot of the pictures are fashion poses where you have to look beautiful, but you aren't smiling. You may be photographed in an awkward position, but you still have to look pretty. Study the look, the poses, and the facial expressions. Then, practice regularly in the mirror, until you think you can complete a fashion shoot that looks high fashion.
Step 2
Hire a photographer to shoot photos for your portfolio. Along with a regular head and body shot, you will need several high fashion shots. Get creative; high fashion is about being unique but beautiful at the same time. Wear three or four different outfits during the photo shoot. You can even hire a hair stylist and a makeup artist to help you pull off some extreme looks.
Step 3
Put together your modeling portfolio. Your portfolio will be like a large binder with enlarged photos that you can show potential clients. The photos should be in plastic sleeves so you can add and switch out photos easily. Make sure you place your regular head and body shots in the beginning and then fill it in with the best photos you have. Because modeling for "Seventeen" magazine is the goal, make sure you use a lot of high-fashion poses.
Step 4
Create your modeling composite. You can choose to do this yourself if you have computer skills, or you can have one created for you. A composite is an 8.5x11 sheet of paper, printed in the landscape setting. It should have five to seven of your best photos and be in an organized, professional layout. You should also include your name, contact information, age, height and weight. Once you have an agent, your composite will include your agent's contact information.
Step 5
Find an agent. Because your goal is to be a model in "Seventeen" magazine, you will want an agent that deals with more high-profile clients. Do an Internet search for modeling agencies like Wilhelmina Models and mail them your modeling composite sheet. You can also look for agents in your area by using your local phone book.
Step 6
Visit modeling websites. "Seventeen" Magazine frequently has open casting calls that you can easily find online at websites like Talent Hunter and New Faces (see Resources). They also advertise their open casting calls on their Facebook page and blog (see Resources). Because "Seventeen" magazine is always looking for fresh new talent, you can also visit their Facebook page for an email address to send your photos.
Step 7
Complete other modeling assignments. You can land other gigs either through your agent or by attending open casting calls that can be found online and in your local newspaper. Landing other gigs is important to build your portfolio as well as your reputation in the modeling industry. Attend fashion events and meet designers. The more work you do the better shot you have at becoming a model for "Seventeen" magazine.
