Overview
If you're interested in modeling part time or full time, catalog modeling jobs can provide a good foundation for your portfolio. Catalog modeling jobs are also easier to get than high-profile runway work or designer campaigns. Several celebrities got their start in catalog modeling, including Brooke Shields and Adriana Lima.
Physical Requirements
Unlike other types of modeling work, catalog modeling jobs are more open to a variety of body types and physical looks because of the many kinds of catalogs in print. Full-figured models and models of various ethnic backgrounds, heights and ages can find work.
Working With an Agent
The best way to find legitimate work as a catalog model is to sign with a modeling agency. Most agencies host open calls throughout the year to sign fresh talent, and professional head shots are not necessarily required. Agencies get a percentage of the money a model earns from a catalog job.
Auditions
Auditions for catalog modeling jobs are typically 5 to 20 minutes long. Models are called in one at a time and might be dismissed immediately if they don't fit the needed physical type. If they do, they may be asked to try on clothes, smile, pose or discuss themselves and their career. Often, a handful of models will be called back before the people in charge decide whom they will hire.
Catalog Shoots
A model who is hired for a catalog job will typically need to work long hours on the shoot to meet the deadline. Catalog modeling jobs can take 4 or 5 18-hour days in a row, and the model is expected to be enthusiastic and perform well throughout in spite of any exhaustion. Models are also expected to take criticism well and handle frequent clothing, hair and makeup changes.
Catalog Modeling Scams
If you're interested in modeling for catalogs, beware of scams that often involve freelance agents, photographers or companies that offer to make you famous or rich. These scams generally either ask for money or permission to take photographs of the model in compromising positions or clothes. Children should never be allowed to attend a shoot alone, and people who are approached by someone on the street who offers to get them modeling work should exhaustively research the offer before accepting.
